Mina Mina Jukurrpa (Mina Mina Dreaming) by Valda Granites represents an important Dreaming story from the Mina Mina area, located west of Yuendumu in the Northern Territory. Mina Mina is a significant site for Warlpiri women and is connected to ancestral stories that describe the travels of women across the land.

According to the Mina Mina Jukurrpa, a group of ancestral women travelled from west to east, dancing, singing, and performing ceremonies as they moved across Country. During this journey they collected karlangu (digging sticks) and bush foods, and created sacred sites along the way. These stories continue to guide cultural knowledge and are passed down through generations of Warlpiri women.

Description

Valda Granites

Valda Napangardi Granites is a proud Warlpiri woman and highly regarded artist from the remote community of Yuendumu, located in Central Australia. Born in 1974 in Alice Springs, Valda is the granddaughter of two iconic Warlpiri artists and cultural leaders, the late Paddy Japaljarri Sims (1916–2010) and Bessie Nakamarra Sims (1932–2012) – both foundational figures in the contemporary Warlpiri art movement.

Growing up in Yuendumu, Valda was immersed in her culture from childhood. She learned directly from her elders, who passed down not only their artistic techniques, but the sacred Dreaming stories, ceremonial designs and deep knowledge of Country that shape Warlpiri identity. Her works are grounded in Jukurrpa (Dreaming) – ancestral narratives that hold spiritual, cultural and geographic meaning. These stories have been taught and shared across countless generations, and Valda takes great care to ensure they are represented with respect and cultural integrity.

Valda’s painting style is recognisable for its rhythmic dotwork, subtle tonal movement, and gentle sense of flow. While her compositions may appear abstract to the untrained eye, every shape, line and pattern represents specific elements of Country: waterholes, desert blooms, ceremonial pathways, sandhills and the tracks of ancestral beings moving across the land.

Her work is both contemporary and deeply traditional – a testament to living culture. Through her painting, Valda continues the legacy of her grandparents while adding her own distinctive visual language, honouring the stories and the Country entrusted to her care.

Valda lives in Yuendumu with her family and is a respected custodian, mother and community member. Her artworks are held in private collections across Australia and internationally.
