Carved from Country

These hand-carved birds are created by Elah Yunupingu and Barbara Wanambi, artists from Arnhem Land whose practices are deeply connected to Country, family, and ancestral knowledge.

Each bird is individually carved and painted using rarrk, a finely layered cross-hatching technique that carries meaning, authority, and cultural lineage. The lines are not decorative, they hold rhythm, story, and connection to land and water, passed down through generations.

Carved forms meet painted knowledge in these works. No two birds are the same; each carries its own presence, movement, and spirit. Together, they sit at the meeting point of sculpture, painting, and cultural expression.

These works are small in scale but rich in story, powerful representations of living culture, made to be held, displayed, and respected.
