Artwork Story:

This painting depicts Barramundi Dreaming, celebrating one of the most important fish found in the waterways of northern Australia. Barramundi have long been a vital food source for Aboriginal people and are closely connected to the rivers, billabongs and coastal waters that sustain life on Country.

In this work, Jock Puautjimi from the Tiwi Islands shares the story of barramundi through the use of rarrk, a traditional cross-hatching technique. The fine lines create movement and texture across the fish, reflecting the flow of water and the living energy of the natural world.

Barramundi Dreaming stories speak of the relationship between people, water and the animals that live within it. These stories are part of the cultural knowledge that has been passed down through generations, teaching respect for Country and the life it supports.

Through the careful application of rarrk, Jock brings the barramundi to life, honouring both the beauty of the fish and the cultural stories connected to the waterways of northern Australia.
