Description
Barbara Pananka
Barbara Pananka (also known by her customary names Barbara Nampitjinpa or Barbara Pananka Mbitjana) is a distinguished Anmatyerre / Kaytetye woman artist from the Central Desert region of Australia, born in 1950 at Bush Park Outstation near Ti Tree, Northern Territory. Raised on Stirling Station (a cattle station near Tennant Creek) she learned early from her parents—her mother Topsy Thomson Nabanardi and father George Jungala—and began engaging in art and cultural practice from a young age.
Her work is grounded in her role as a senior woman and cultural custodian: she paints sacred stories associated with women’s law, particularly from the Utopia lands (Eastern Desert region) — including narratives of bush tucker gathering, ceremonial body‐painting, and other women’s ceremonies.
Barbara is also matriarch to a remarkable artistic family: she is the mother of the “Numina Sisters” (six daughters: Sharon, Selina, Louise, Caroline, Jacinta and Lanita) and two sons, many of whom are celebrated artists themselves
