Woman’s Dreaming – Bush Medicine and Waterhole

This painting represents women travelling across Country to gather bush medicine and visit important waterholes. These journeys are guided by deep cultural knowledge of the land, where women know where particular plants grow and where water can be found.

Bush medicine plants have long been used by Aboriginal families for healing and wellbeing. Women collect leaves, roots, and seeds from native plants and prepare them for traditional medicines. These practices are passed down through generations, with knowledge shared between mothers, daughters, and grandmothers.

In the painting, circular forms often represent waterholes — places where water collects and life is sustained. Flowing patterns and layered dot work reflect the movement across Country as women travel between these sites, gathering plants and caring for the land.

The work celebrates the strength of women and the cultural knowledge they carry, honoring the connection between people, Country, bush medicine, and the life-giving presence of water.

Description

Sharon Butcher Napanangka

Sharon Butcher Napanangka was born in Papunya in 1968 and became involved with the Papunya Tjupi Art Centre in 2010 as an artist. She was elected as a Director in 2017. Papunya Tjupi Arts is a 100% Aboriginal-owned and directed community arts organization, rooted in Papunya, the birthplace of the Western Desert dot-painting movement.

Sharon’s paintings vividly depict the waterholes, creeks, and sand hills surrounding Papunya. She is particularly renowned for her Kapi Tjukurrpa (Water Dreaming) works, which illustrate the elements of a storm—wind, rain, thunderclouds, and lightning. The lines in her pieces symbolize rain and the flow of water from the waterholes, often flooding the normally dry creek beds.

Her artwork is featured in numerous Australian galleries, as well as in collections worldwide, establishing her as an emerging artist to watch.
