Woman Gathering Around Waterhole
By Sharon Napanangka Butcher

This beautiful artwork by Sharon Napanangka Butcher depicts women gathering at an important waterhole, a place of life, connection, and cultural significance in Country. In many Aboriginal cultures, waterholes are sacred meeting places where women come together to collect water, share knowledge, gather bush foods, and pass down stories through generations.

Through intricate patterns and flowing forms, Sharon illustrates the movement of women travelling across Country toward the waterhole. The circular symbols represent the water source itself, surrounded by pathways that reflect journeys taken across the land. These journeys are not only physical but also spiritual—connecting family, community, and ancestral knowledge.

The artwork celebrates the strength of women and their deep relationship with Country. It honours the traditions of gathering, caring for family, and protecting important natural resources that sustain life in the desert landscape.

Rich in cultural meaning and storytelling, Woman Gathering Around Waterhole is a powerful reflection of community, survival, and the enduring connection between people and land.

Description

Sharon Butcher Napanangka

Sharon Butcher Napanangka was born in Papunya in 1968 and became involved with the Papunya Tjupi Art Centre in 2010 as an artist. She was elected as a Director in 2017. Papunya Tjupi Arts is a 100% Aboriginal-owned and directed community arts organization, rooted in Papunya, the birthplace of the Western Desert dot-painting movement.

Sharon’s paintings vividly depict the waterholes, creeks, and sand hills surrounding Papunya. She is particularly renowned for her Kapi Tjukurrpa (Water Dreaming) works, which illustrate the elements of a storm—wind, rain, thunderclouds, and lightning. The lines in her pieces symbolize rain and the flow of water from the waterholes, often flooding the normally dry creek beds.

Her artwork is featured in numerous Australian galleries, as well as in collections worldwide, establishing her as an emerging artist to watch.
