Thorny Lizard Skin by Sharon Numina draws inspiration from the distinctive markings and textured skin of the thorny lizard, a small desert reptile found across the sandy landscapes of Central Australia. The thorny lizard, known for its patterned body and ability to blend into the desert environment, has long been part of the natural life observed by Aboriginal families living on and moving through Country.

In this work, Sharon Numina interprets the intricate surface of the lizard’s skin through rhythmic dotting and repeated pattern. The layered marks reflect the scales and textures of the reptile, while also echoing the patterns found in the desert landscape where the thorny lizard lives.

The painting celebrates the close observation of nature that is central to life on Country. Animals such as the thorny lizard are part of the wider environment that Aboriginal people understand deeply through generations of knowledge, movement, and connection to land.

Through colour, pattern, and repetition, Sharon Numina’s work captures both the beauty of the desert environment and the subtle details of the creatures that inhabit it.

Description

Sharon Numina

Sharon Numina Napanangka (born 1981) is a distinguished Aboriginal artist from the Central Desert region of Australia. She is a member of the Anmatyerre language group and hails from the lands of Stirling Station (near Tennant Creek, NT) and the broader Utopia region.

Sharon is one of six sisters (and three brothers) born to the celebrated painter Barbara Pananka Mbitjana (also known as Barbara Price), who taught her daughters the art practice rooted in their desert country.

Sharon’s work focuses on themes such as bush medicine plants, bush tucker, “My Country” dreaming, emu and thorny‐lizard tracks, and women’s ceremonial body-painting designs. Through layered dots and fluid sweeping lines, she translates her cultural knowledge and connection to her ancestral landscape into vibrant acrylic on canvas works.

Today, Sharon lives in Darwin along with her sisters, where she continues to produce works that both honour her cultural lineage and shine as contemporary art pieces appreciated by collectors throughout Australia and internationally.
