My Country by Sharon Numina reflects the artist’s deep connection to the land she calls home. In this work, Sharon shares her interpretation of Country — the landscapes, sacred places, and pathways that hold memory, culture, and family history.

Through layered dotting and flowing patterns, the painting represents the natural features of the desert environment, including sandhills, water places, and the journeys taken across the land. The rhythmic marks and vibrant colours echo the movement and energy of Country, showing how the landscape is both lived in and remembered.

For Aboriginal artists, Country is more than a physical place. It carries stories, ancestral knowledge, and the relationships between people, land, and community. Sharon Numina’s painting expresses this enduring connection, honouring the places that shape identity and belonging.

Description

Sharon Numina

Sharon Numina Napanangka (born 1981) is a distinguished Aboriginal artist from the Central Desert region of Australia. She is a member of the Anmatyerre language group and hails from the lands of Stirling Station (near Tennant Creek, NT) and the broader Utopia region.

Sharon is one of six sisters (and three brothers) born to the celebrated painter Barbara Pananka Mbitjana (also known as Barbara Price), who taught her daughters the art practice rooted in their desert country.

Sharon’s work focuses on themes such as bush medicine plants, bush tucker, “My Country” dreaming, emu and thorny‐lizard tracks, and women’s ceremonial body-painting designs. Through layered dots and fluid sweeping lines, she translates her cultural knowledge and connection to her ancestral landscape into vibrant acrylic on canvas works.

Today, Sharon lives in Darwin along with her sisters, where she continues to produce works that both honour her cultural lineage and shine as contemporary art pieces appreciated by collectors throughout Australia and internationally.
