Artwork Story:

This painting depicts a Mimi Spirit, one of the sacred spirit beings from the stories of West Arnhem Land. Mimi spirits are believed to live among the rocky escarpments and stone country, moving through the landscape and sharing knowledge with people. They are often shown as tall, delicate figures who carry great cultural wisdom.

In this artwork, the Mimi spirit represents Mother Nature, a powerful presence connected to the land and the life it supports. She holds several dilly bags, each one symbolising a different Aboriginal language. These bags carry the voices, stories and knowledge of many communities, reflecting the rich diversity of languages across Aboriginal Australia.

The dilly bags represent how language is carried, protected and passed down through generations. Just as dilly bags traditionally hold food, tools and important items gathered on Country, in this story they hold the cultural knowledge contained within language.

Through this painting, the artist celebrates the connection between Country, culture and language, showing how these elements are carefully held and protected. The Mimi spirit stands as a guardian of this knowledge, reminding us of the importance of keeping languages, stories and cultural traditions strong for future generations.

Description

Noel Nabegeyo

Noel Nabegeyo is an Aboriginal artist from West Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory, a region known for its ancient rock art traditions and distinctive cross-hatching techniques known as rarrk.

Growing up on Country, Noel learned the stories, symbols and painting styles passed down through generations of his family and community. His work reflects a deep connection to land, culture and ancestral knowledge, often depicting animals, bush foods and sacred stories that have been shared through Arnhem Land for thousands of years.

Using traditional methods and natural inspiration, Noel creates intricate works that celebrate the richness of Aboriginal culture. Each painting carries layers of meaning — telling stories of Country, seasonal cycles and the life that thrives across the Arnhem Land landscape.

Through his art, Noel continues the long tradition of Arnhem Land storytelling, keeping cultural knowledge alive while sharing it with people far beyond his homeland.
