In “Mimi Spirit,” Manuel brings to life one of the most sacred and enduring figures of Arnhem Land cultural tradition. The Mimi spirits are ancient beings believed to inhabit the rocky escarpments and crevices of the Arnhem Land plateau. According to traditional stories, they lived on the land long before Aboriginal people arrived and taught the first people how to hunt, dance, and paint.
Manuel’s delicate depiction reflects the unique nature of the Mimi spirits, tall, slender, and almost weightless, moving gracefully through the stone country. Their elongated forms echo the fragile nature of these spiritual beings, who are said to be so thin that strong winds could break them. Because of this, they are believed to live within the cracks of rock faces and only emerge in still conditions.
Rendered in the distinctive painting traditions of West Arnhem Land, the figure appears animated and ceremonial, embodying both movement and spiritual presence. The intricate linework and natural pigments pay homage to the deep artistic heritage of the region, where storytelling, law, and connection to Country are passed through generations of artists.
