Artwork Story:

This painting tells the story of bush medicine — the traditional knowledge of healing plants, leaves, roots, and bark that has been passed down through generations. Bush medicine is central to life on Country, used to treat sickness, cleanse the body, protect spirit, and maintain balance between people and the land.

The layered patterns and flowing forms represent the medicinal plants growing across the landscape, the pathways taken to gather them, and the sacred knowledge held by Elders. Each mark reflects careful observation of nature — knowing when to collect, how to prepare, and how to use the plants with respect.

The colours often echo the earth itself: ochres, greens, and soft whites symbolising leaves, ash, smoke, and soil. These elements speak to healing not only of the body, but of spirit and community.

Bush medicine is more than a remedy — it is culture, responsibility, and connection. This artwork honours the wisdom of ancestors and the ongoing practice of caring for people through the healing power of Country.

Description

Sharon Numina

Sharon Numina Napanangka (born 1981) is a distinguished Aboriginal artist from the Central Desert region of Australia. She is a member of the Anmatyerre language group and hails from the lands of Stirling Station (near Tennant Creek, NT) and the broader Utopia region.

Sharon is one of six sisters (and three brothers) born to the celebrated painter Barbara Pananka Mbitjana (also known as Barbara Price), who taught her daughters the art practice rooted in their desert country.

Sharon’s work focuses on themes such as bush medicine plants, bush tucker, “My Country” dreaming, emu and thorny‐lizard tracks, and women’s ceremonial body-painting designs. Through layered dots and fluid sweeping lines, she translates her cultural knowledge and connection to her ancestral landscape into vibrant acrylic on canvas works.

Today, Sharon lives in Darwin along with her sisters, where she continues to produce works that both honour her cultural lineage and shine as contemporary art pieces appreciated by collectors throughout Australia and internationally.
