This painting tells the story of bush medicine — the traditional knowledge of healing plants, leaves, roots, and bark that has been passed down through generations. Bush medicine is central to life on Country, used to treat sickness, cleanse the body, protect spirit, and maintain balance between people and the land.

The layered patterns and flowing forms represent the medicinal plants growing across the landscape, the pathways taken to gather them, and the sacred knowledge held by Elders. Each mark reflects careful observation of nature — knowing when to collect, how to prepare, and how to use the plants with respect.

The colours often echo the earth itself: ochres, greens, and soft whites symbolising leaves, ash, smoke, and soil. These elements speak to healing not only of the body, but of spirit and community.

Bush medicine is more than a remedy — it is culture, responsibility, and connection. This artwork honours the wisdom of ancestors and the ongoing practice of caring for people through the healing power of Country.

Description

Louise Numina

Louise is one of the renowned Numina sisters—an extraordinary family of artists whose bold, confident and vibrant works are cherished in homes across Australia and around the world. She is one of six sisters—Sharon, Selina, Caroline, Jacinta and Lanita—each celebrated in their own right as highly respected Aboriginal artists.

Louise, her sisters and two brothers were born to Barbara Pananka Price and the late Douglas Petyarre. Their artistic lineage runs deep: two of Douglas’ sisters, the internationally acclaimed artists Gloria and Kathleen Petyarre, passed down their knowledge, teaching their nieces the Bush Medicine Leaf ceremony (Aunty Gloria) and the Thorny Lizard Dreaming (Aunty Kathleen). The Numina sisters are also great-nieces to iconic artists Emily Kngwarreye and Kudditji Kngwarreye, and share connections with Minnie Pwerle and Ada Bird Petyarre—towering figures of the Utopia art movement that emerged in the Eastern Desert in the 1970s.

Louise spent her early schooling years at Stirling Station near Tennant Creek before attending Yirrara College in Alice Springs. After returning to Stirling Station, she worked with the local Community Development Program before moving to Darwin in 1995, where her career as an artist began to flourish. She later studied at Nungalinya College and holds a Diploma in Fine Arts.

Louise’s artwork has been exhibited widely across Australia. In 2017, her stunning Bush Medicine Leaf design was featured on a range of couture ‘resort wear’ by designer Pia du Pradal, launched at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in Brisbane.
