Jock Puautjimi

Jock Puautjimi, born in 1962, is a distinguished Tiwi artist whose creative journey spans multiple mediums, including ceramics, painting, wood carving, and textile design. His Tiwi name, Pulawurrumayini, translates to “mullet,” and he belongs to the Wantarringa (sun) skin group. Jock’s artistic roots are deeply tied to his heritage, with his mother’s country being Pularumpi on Melville Island and his father’s country at Port Hurd on Bathurst Island.

Jock’s artistic career began in 1979, and he has since earned recognition for his exceptional craftsmanship and cultural storytelling. He holds certificates in ceramics from the Darwin Institute of Technology and Nepean Technical School in New South Wales. Over the years, he has shared his expertise as a ceramics instructor and artist-in-residence at various institutions.

Jock’s work has been widely exhibited across Australia, the USA, and the UK, with his pieces held in prestigious collections such as the National Gallery of Australia and the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory. His art reflects the rich traditions of Tiwi culture, blending traditional motifs with contemporary techniques, making him a celebrated figure in the world of Indigenous art.
